Where are our students when we plan their learning?

‘Construction’ of learning often happens behind the scenes, in our planning time at school or at home. It happens in team meetings and on professional development days. But that means that some important voices are not at the table. Where are the voices of our students when we plan their learning?

The ‘Co-Constructed Classroom’ is a space where all students are valued and empowered; where teachers and students work together to plan learning, to do learning and to assess learning. The Co-Constructed Classroom doesn’t follow a tightly structured system, and it doesn’t rely on any particular learning tool. Instead, it allows students the freedom to engage in their own discoveries and it allows teachers to capitalise on the ‘teachable moment’ without fear of ‘not teaching the way we’re supposed to.’

The Co-Constructed Classroom is a place where learning feels relevant, important and powerful, where relationships and collaboration are prioritised and where identities are affirmed and given space to develop.
